Albertina Walker-Don't Let Nobody turn you around

Walker was born in Chicago, Illinois,[2] to Ruben and Camille Coleman Walker. Her mother was born in Houston County, Georgia, and her father in Bibb County, Georgia. They moved to Chicago between 1917-1920 where they lived out their lives. Albertina had four siblings born in Bibb County and four born in Chicago. Albertina began singing in the youth choir at the West Point Baptist Church at an early age, and joined several Gospel groups thereafter, including The Pete Williams Singers and the Robert Anderson Singers. Albertina was greatly influenced by Mahalia Jackson, her friend and confidante. Mahalia Jackson took her on the road when she was just a teenager. "Mahalia used to kid me. She'd say, 'Girl, you need to go sing by yourself.' " recalled Walker in a 2010 Washington Post Interview. Albertina Walker did just that. In 1951, she formed the group called The Caravans. She was popularly referred to as the "Queen of Gospel Music", initially by such notables as the late Reverend James Cleveland and Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr., for her outstanding achievements within the genre after the death of Mahalia Jackson in 1972.[3] [edit]Musical career In the early 1950s Walker founded her own Gospel music group The Caravans, enlisting fellow singers from The Robert Anderson Singers (Ora Lee Hopkins, Elyse Yancey and Nellie Grace Daniels). The Caravans' membership has included: James Cleveland, Bessie Griffin, Shirley Caesar, Dorothy Norwood, Inez Andrews, Loleatta Holloway, Cassietta George, and Delores Washington. Her discovery of these artists resulted in the nickname "Star Maker". Walker retired The Caravans in the late 1960s, performing as a solo artist. In the mid 1970s, Walker signed with Savoy Records then Benson Records, Word Records, A&M Records, and other record companies, recording a series of solo projects, many of them with big church choirs including The Evangelical Choir, The Cathedral of Love Choir, The Metro Mass choir, and her own church choir, The West Point Choir. Albertina recorded her first solo project Put a Little Love in Your Heart in 1975. She also recorded several projects together with Reverend James Cleveland. To date, she has recorded over 60 albums, including gold selling hits "Please Be Patient With Me", "I Can Go to God in Prayer", "The Best Is Yet to Come", "Impossible Dream", and "Joy Will Come". Walker sang for United States presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton, and South Africa's president, Nelson Mandela. In 1995, Walker joined Thelma Houston, CeCe Peniston, Phoebe Snow and Lois Walden to record a gospel album in common, Good News in Hard Times, as the quintet called The Sisters of Glory. Walker recorded a reunion album with her group The Caravans entitled Paved the Way, which was released by Malaco Records on September 5, 2006. Performers included Walker, Dorothy Norwood, Inez Andrews, and Delores Washington. The album was dubbed by Billboard magazine as one of the most memorable releases of 2006[4] and entered the Billboard charts in the top ten and remained in the top forty for sixteen weeks. Paved the Way was nominated for a Grammy, Dove, Soul Train Music Award and two Stellar Awards.

    99 & A Half Won’t Do, Dorothy Love Coates, Specialty 897 Aug 1956

From Sacred To Secular: A Soul Awakening History of Soul Records 8CD In a comprehensive overview from 1927 to 1963, History of Soul Records’ 8CD anthology covers the genesis of soul music, tracing connections between R&B, jazz and blues, and gospel, the secular and the sacred. As popular black musical genres were adopted by white teenage audiences in the 1950s, black music reverted to more authentic, basic styles. By 1960, the sound of black popular music had turned away from a driving, largely uptempo rhythm and blues towards a more emotionally poignant style. The term ‘soul’ popped up here and there, but only became common parlance after the release of Ray Charles’s I Believe To My Soul at the end of 1959. The growing Civil Rights movement, the rise of the 45rpm record and the introduction of the electric guitar all played their part in the creation of a new sound. Detroit had Berry Gordy’s Motown, Chicago had Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions and New York had Atlantic Records along with white songwriters Burt Bacharach and Jerry Ragavoy producing their uptown soul. Down south, Stax was setting Memphis alight, Fame were starting up in Muscle Shoals, and New Orleans was putting funk into the mix. By 1963, soul had gone mainstream. There were more soulful records in the charts in 1962 alone than there had been in the whole of the 1950s. This collection of breathtaking blues and spiritual music brings you some of the most impassioned, compelling vocal performances ever to be recorded. The accompanying illustrated 32-page book sets out the historical background and explains some of the technical features that make these beautiful songs the precursors of soul music. logo SOUL021 www.historyofsoul.net Dorothy (McGriff) Love Coates began singing with the Original Gospel Harmonettes in the early 1940s. With her raggedy, rasping contralto voice, skilled improvisation and preacher’s fire, she could compete with the most powerful male hard gospel singers of her day. She sang with such ardour that members of the group sometimes had to drag her back onto the stage. James Brown copied this device and made it part of his act in the 1960s. Many secular songwriters drew on her songs for inspiration, sometimes simply taking the title, as in the case of Wilson Pickett’s 99 & A Half (Won’t Do) and the Supremes’ hit You Can’t Hurry Love, based on (You Can’t Hurry God) He’s Right On Time. The ballad No Hiding Place came out in 1954 and was the group’s seventh Specialty release. Coates was active in the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s when she worked with Martin Luther King. She rejected all offers to cross over to secular music but many artists like Little Richard and Mavis Staples imitated her sanctified singing style and shout.

Somebody Prayed for Me by Dorothy Norwood with the Georgia Mass Choir

I'm back with another YouTube Gospel video. In 1994, Dorothy Norwood came out with her album "Feel Like..." where she teams with the Georgia Mass Choir. In addition to some of her famous songs like "I Stepped Out" and "Have Your Way", (which I have on YouTube as well) this nice, country, uplifiting song has found its way into many a church choirs. This southern gospel song is "Somebody Prayed For Me" I do not own this song, nor am I seeking monetary gains or publicity. The lyrics are on the video for those who want to follow along or learn. I hope you enjoy. God Bless!!
