Bergo '45 Song of the Week #68 - Dwight's Pick for 10/19/14: http://www.bergo45.com "Waiting On A Friend" by The Rolling Stones from Tattoo You (1981) Rolling Stones Records "You must have something known as Mojo to write a song this fine, and then bury it at the bottom of the album. Track #11...only Mick and Keith..." - Dwight Lewis This is a weekly dive into the musical mind of Bergo '45. Each week, a new song is chosen by a different member of the band. Check out the playlist to see all of the past selections. Grab a towel and give it a listen.... The Rolling Stones are an English rock band formed at Dartford, Kent in 1962. The first stable line-up consisted of band leader Brian Jones (guitar, harmonica), Ian Stewart (piano), Mick Jagger (lead vocals, harmonica), Keith Richards (guitar), Bill Wyman (bass), and Charlie Watts (drums). The Rolling Stones were in the vanguard of the British Invasion of the US in 1964 and 1965. At first noted for their long hair as much as their music, the band are identified with the youthful and rebellious counterculture of the 1960s. They were instrumental in making blues a major part of rock and roll, and for changing the international focus of blues culture to the less sophisticated blues typified by Chess Records artists. These included Muddy Waters, writer of "Rollin' Stone", the song that inspired the band's name. Their first single, "Come On" was released on June 1963 and reached number 21 in the UK hit parade. After seven successful albums, a period of musical experimentation culminated in the poorly received and largely psychedelic album, Their Satanic Majesties Request (1967). But the group returned to their bluesy roots with Beggars' Banquet (1968), Let It Bleed (1969), Sticky Fingers (1971), and Exile on Main St. (1972) which are considered to be the band's best work from their "Golden Age". Musicologist Robert Palmer attributed the "remarkable endurance" of the Rolling Stones to being "rooted in traditional verities, in rhythm-and-blues and soul music" while "more ephemeral pop fashions have come and gone". Jones first led the band, but his drug problem caused his demise and, after teaming as the band's songwriters, Jagger and Richards became de facto leaders. Jones left the band a month before his death in 1969, having already been replaced by Mick Taylor, who left in 1975. Since then Ronnie Wood has played guitar along with Keith Richards. Following Wyman's departure in 1993, Darryl Jones has been the main bassist. Stewart was removed from the official line-up in 1963 but continued as occasional pianist until his death in 1985. Other notable keyboardists for the band have included Nicky Hopkins, active from 1967 to 1982; Billy Preston through the mid 1970s (most prominent on Black and Blue); and Chuck Leavell, active since 1982. The Rolling Stones continued to release hit singles and albums through the 1970s, Some Girls (1978) and Tattoo You (1981) being their two most sold albums worldwide. In the 1980s, a feud between Jagger and Richards about the band's musical direction was patch up and the band made a come back with the hit album, Steel Wheels (1989). In the band's tradition the album was supported by big stadium and arena tours, a tradition continued through the 1990s and 2000s. During this period the band made the four highest-grossing concert tours to date: (Voodoo Lounge Tour (1994–95), Bridges to Babylon Tour (1997–99), Licks Tour (2002–03), A Bigger Bang Tour (2005–07)). The Rolling Stones were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989, and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2004. Rolling Stone magazine ranked them fourth on the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time" list, and their estimated album sales are above 250 million. They have released twenty-nine studio albums, eighteen live albums and numerous compilations. Let It Bleed (1969) was their first of five consecutive number one studio and Live albums in the UK. Sticky Fingers (1971) was the first of eight consecutive number one studio albums in the US. In 2008 the band ranked 10th on the "Billboard Hot 100 All-Time Top Artists" chart. In 2012, the band celebrated their 50th anniversary. All rights belong to their respective owners © Rolling Stones Records

Watching girls go passing by, It ain't the latest thing, I'm just standing in a doorway, I'm just trying to make some sense, Out of these girls go passing by, The tales they tell of men, I'm not waiting on a lady, I'm just waiting on a friend, A smile relieves a heart that grieves, Remember what I said, I'm not waiting on a lady, I'm just waiting on a friend, I'm just waiting on a friend, Don't need a whore, I don't need no booze, Don't need a virgin priest, But I need someone I can cry to, I need someone to protect, Making love and breaking hearts, It is a game for youth, But I'm not waiting on a lady, I'm just waiting on a friend.

the rolling stones - waiting on a friend - no sax

Edit made from the one of the 1981 album "Tattoo You" (Japan mini lp remastered 2005)[TOCP-66458]. Hurray, no saxoal harassment in this edit. That thing just doesn't belong in Stones music, period. So I made a long, nice & gentle vocal fade out. I hate to say it - actually I don't - but I evade every Stones song with a sax in it. Evasive manoeuvres. If you have the same problem... solved by this edit. #8 in the US, #17 in Holland, #44 in Australia, #50 in the UK. Experiments in my musical laboratory proved in any of the forementioned countries it would have been a #1 hit if the sax-o-phone had never been invented. Sax o phone players usually think they are the centre of a band, they want all the attention, perform way too long boring solo's... but what they really do is fart in a metal tube, for - generally - farting is what the sound of a woodwind's mouthpiece in a metal horn is like... (A sax is a woodwind instrument and not a brass instrument.) The only reason why it was kind of a hit in the US and Holland was that MTV had just started in 1981 and desperately needed a video of a great band. Despite all the airplay on MTV it only reached #8, prooving my point. However, there ARE some that know how to play this "phone" properly: Jim Sherwood on the Mothers of Invention's album "Ruben & The Jets", the song "Anything", written by lead singer Ray Collins (watch a hummingbird doing its stunning flight moves - revolving and flying upside down - during this sax solo) https://youtu.be/GQXfOcrL3lI?t=1m30s Songfacts.com says: This is a rare mature reflection from The Stones, as Mick Jagger sings about the values of friendship as opposed to women. Originally Recorded in 1972 at the sessions for their album Goats Head Soup, this didn't make the cut but was repackaged and released on Tattoo You nine years later. Released as a single, it did very well in America thanks to the advent of MTV; the network launched in 1981 and was thrilled to have a new video by a rock band of The Stones' stature. The music video is very literal: Mick Jagger is standing in a doorway, waiting for his friend (Keith Richards) to come by. Then they go to a bar and meet up with the rest of the band. Directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg, who did their Rock and Roll Circus special in 1968, it did very well on MTV despite the very simple concept; the network launched a few months before the song was released as a single, and they were desperate for big-name rock acts. Reggae legend Peter Tosh is the Rasta sitting on the stoop with Mick Jagger. It was filmed in New York City; the building where they are waiting also shows up on the cover of Led Zeppelin's album Physical Graffiti. There are no musician credits on Tattoo You, but it is clear that Mick Taylor contributed on guitar, which he was not compensated for. Taylor fell into obscurity after leaving The Stones in 1974. Mick Jagger said in 1983: "Just let me be cynical for a moment. First of all, it's really NOT about waiting on a woman friend. It's just about a FRIEND; it doesn't matter if it's a man or a woman. I can see people saying, Oh, we're all much older now, Mick's writing this much more compassionate stuff, must be about a real person. But that's only in their perception of it." The Stones hired jazz saxophonist Sonny Rollins to play on the Tattoo You album. He played on this as well as the tracks "Slave" and "Neighbors." Alas... [r] This also features Nicky Hopkins on piano, Jimmy Miller on percussion and Kasper Winding on tambourine. Winding was a Danish session drummer who played on the Tattoo You sessions. Bass: Mick Taylor Billy Joe Armstrong of Green Day says this is the song he wants played at his funeral. "It's one of the best songs they've ever written," he told Entertainment Weekly. When you're up in heaven, or wherever you're at, you're just waiting for friends to come along." ®© UMG All rights reserved by the copyright owners. The Rolling Stones - Just Waiting on a Friend Lyrics in description

The Rolling Stones - Just Waiting on a Friend (Lyrics in description) From Wikipedia: "Waiting on a Friend" is a song by The Rolling Stones from their 1981 album Tattoo You. Released as the album's second single, it reached #13 on the US singles chart. Recording of "Waiting on a Friend" (as 'Waiting for a Friend') began in late 1972 through early 1973 in Kingston, Jamaica, during the Goats Head Soup sessions when the band still had Taylor as a member, but his guitar part did not make it to the overdubbing sessions in April 1981 when the song was selected by Tattoo You producer Chris Kimsey as one the band could re-work for the album. This leaves Keith Richards distinct electric guitar part the only guitar on the recording. In the liner notes to 1993's compilation album Jump Back, Jagger said, "We all liked it at the time but it didn't have any lyrics, so there we were... The lyric I added is very gentle and loving, about friendships in the band." Jagger also had stated that the 1981 lyrics were contemplated for a future possible video, making the song the first Rolling Stones single to be packaged as a possible video for the emerging MTV channel. The video, directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg (who also directed their 1968 special The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus), became very popular on MTV and featured reggae artist Peter Tosh sitting on a stoop with Jagger who is seen waiting for Keith Richards. The lyrics see a more mature side of singer Jagger represented. He speaks of setting aside women and vices in favor of making some sense of his life and finding the virtues inherent in true friendship. The song is noted for its dreamy qualities brought on by the soft guitars, smooth rhythm, and Jagger's lilting refrain of "doo-doo-doo"'s. Stones-recording veteran Nicky Hopkins performs the track's running piano. The Stones hired jazz saxophonist Sonny Rollins to perform the solo on this song, as well as two others on the album. On his addition to the track, Jagger said in 1985: "I had a lot of trepidation about working with Sonny Rollins. This guy's a giant of the saxophone. Charlie said, 'He's never going to want to play on a Rolling Stones record!' I said, 'Yes he is going to want to.' And he did and he was wonderful. I said, 'Would you like me to stay out there in the studio?' He said, 'Yeah, you tell me where you want me to play and DANCE the part out.' So I did that. And that's very important: communication in hand, dance, whatever. You don't have to do a whole ballet, but sometimes that movement of the shoulder tells the guy to kick in on the beat." Percussion (claves, cabasa, guiro and conga) was added during overdub sessions in April and June 1981 by Mike Carabello. Released as the second single after "Start Me Up," "Waiting on a Friend" became a radio staple in the US where it reached #13 on the singles chart in early-1982. It did not fare as well in Europe, reaching only #50 on the UK Singles Chart but as high as #9 in the Netherlands. Although included on both Jump Back and the earlier Rewind (1971--1984), it was not included on 2002's Forty Licks but is present on 2012's GRRR!. Lyrics to "Just Waiting on a Friend": Watching girls go passing by It ain't the latest thing I'm just standing in a doorway I'm just trying to make some sense Out of these girls go passing by The tales they tell of men I'm not waiting on a lady I'm just waiting on a friend A smile relieves a heart that grieves Remember what I said I'm not waiting on a lady I'm just waiting on a friend I'm just waiting on a friend Don't need a whore I don't need no booze Don't need a virgin priest But I need someone I can cry to I need someone to protect Making love and breaking hearts It is a game for youth But I'm not waiting on a lady I'm just waiting on a friend DISCLAIMER: All clips and music are copyrighted to their respective owners. Johnny Cash - Hurt Official Video HD

"Hurt" official music video performed by Johnny Cash. This song is about realizing consequence and regret. It sends a powerful message that we should all proceed through life wisely, because there is nothing worse than being stuck with a label, a pain, a sickness, or a death, that we know beforehand will leave us only wishing things had been different and that we could change the choices we made. ----------------------------------------- Lyrics: I hurt myself today To see if I still feel I focus on the pain The only thing that's real The needle tears a hole The old familiar sting Try to kill it all away But I remember everything What have I become My sweetest friend? Everyone I know Goes away in the end And you could have it all My empire of dirt I will let you down I will make you hurt I wear this crown of thorns Upon my liar's chair Full of broken thoughts I cannot repair Beneath the stains of time The feelings disappear You are someone else I am still right here What have I become My sweetest friend? Everyone I know Goes away in the end And you could have it all My empire of dirt I will let you down I will make you hurt If I could start again A million miles away I would keep myself I would find a way

Said it was one of my friend’s songs do you want to drink on? She took Jamie as a chaser, Jack for the fun She got Arthur on the table, with Johnny riding as shot gun Chatted some more, one more drink at the bar Then put Van on the jukebox, got up to dance, you know She played the fiddle in an Irish band But she fell in love with an English man Kissed her on the neck and then I took her by the hand Said baby I just want to dance With my pretty little Galway Girl You’re my pretty little Galway Girl You know she beat me at darts and then she beat me at pool And then she kissed me like there was nobody else in the room As last orders were called, was when she stood on the stool After dancing the céilí, singing to trad tunes I never heard Carrickfergus ever sung so sweet Acapella in the bar using her feet for a beat Oh I could have that voice playing on repeat for a week And in this packed out room, swear she was singing to me She played the fiddle in an Irish band But she fell in love with an English man Kissed her on the neck and then I took her by the hand Said baby I just want to dance My pretty little Galway girl My my my my my my my Galway girl My my my my my my my Galway girl My my my my my my my Galway girl Now we’ve outstayed our welcome and it’s closing time I was holding her hand, her hand was holding mine Our coats both smell of smoke, whisky and wine As we fill up our lungs with the cold air of the night I walked her home then she took me inside Finish some Doritos and another bottle of wine I swear I’m going to put you in a song that I write About a Galway girl and a perfect night She played the fiddle in an Irish band But she fell in love with an English man Kissed her on the neck and then I took her by the hand Said baby I just want to dance My pretty little Galway girl My my my my my my my Galway girl My my my my my my my Galway girl My my my my my my my Galway girl
